Dr Dizaei’s book ‘Not One Of Us’

28th february 2007

The imminent release of Dr Dizaei's book, ‘Not One Of Us', is seen as a milestone by the MetBPA. It charts the life of one of the most successful black minority ethnic officers in the MPS and the fact that he is achieving his goals in spite of the challenges he has faced.

Dr Dizaei has spent a lot of time considering the merits of writing a book and we in the MetBPA support him in his goal to tell his story. While we believe that the issues surrounding Operation Helios will prove to be an uncomfortable read for all parties concerned, it also acts as a demonstration of transparency that highlights some of the mistakes that have already been made and acknowledged. MetBPA Deputy Chair on the 2006 New Years Honours List

Bevan Powel
MetBPA Deputy Chair

Deputy Chair of the Metropolitan Black Police Association and one of the founding  members of the National Black Police Association, Bevan Powell has been  award Member (of the Order) of the British Empire  (MBE).  Powell was one of three members of the Black Police Association who gave evidence to the Stephen Lawrence inquiry labelling the police service institutionally racist. The award has been given for his extraordinary commitment and selfless dedication in bringing about meaningful change in the approach of the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) to race and diversity issues.

Powell said “I am extremely honoured to receive this appointment  and it is shared with so many friends and colleagues within the BPA movement and broader Metropolitan Police Service.  The support of  my family and close friends has been central to my achievements throughout my career and without them much of this would have been impossible.  Although much has been achieved in the area of race and policing, there is still much more to do in helping to create a police service which addresses the needs of all communities in a fair and just way”.

Powell is an advocate of Affirmative action, stating “if the police service is to truly reflect the communities it serves, radical recruitment measures must be employed”.
Powell’s  work with young people has lead to the creation of the Association’s youth forum the Young Black Positive Advocates (YBPA). The YBPA are graduates of the Associations Leadership Programme. The aim of the group is to raise awareness of social and crime issues with peers, particularly around violent crime and youth leadership. Powell said, “ These young people inspire me every day”.

Powell has also developed international initiatives and relationships with other police departments and agencies across the world, including the United States, South Africa and Jamaica. He has pioneered  many initiatives and programmes addressing the issues of youth empowerment, violent crime and drug abuse, focussing on young people, further helping to break down what to many would have been seen as insurmountable barriers.
His current role involves the engagement of diverse communities in London. He heads the MetBPA’s  VOYAGE  initiative in partnership with the MPS Safer Neighbourhoods unit to build capacity in young people from black and minority ethnic  communities living in some of London's most challenged boroughs.
