Dr Dizaei’s book ‘Not One Of Us’

february 2007

The imminent release of Dr Dizaei's book, ‘Not One Of Us', is seen as a milestone by the MetBPA. It charts the life of one of the most successful black minority ethnic officers in the MPS and the fact that he is achieving his goals in spite of the challenges he has faced.

Dr Dizaei has spent a lot of time considering the merits of writing a book and we in the MetBPA support him in his goal to tell his story. While we believe that the issues surrounding Operation Helios will prove to be an uncomfortable read for all parties concerned, it also acts as a demonstration of transparency that highlights some of the mistakes that have already been made and acknowledged.

The recent High Court ruling in relation to Helios and private phone interceptions is a clear indication of some of the systemic failures that surrounded the case.

The MetBPA have looked at the educational value of Dr Dizaei's book and strongly believe that open and frank discourse is a path to a better future for the MPS.

While we agree that the police service should investigate possible corruption, Helios demonstrated that the safeguards against disproportionality were in serious need of upgrading to avoid another future problem.

We acknowledge that the MPS has moved forward on many issues regarding diversity aspects that came out of Helios and we are committed to work in partnership with the organisation to ensure proportionality in all internal investigations. We congratulate Dr Dizaei and wish him success in this endeavour.
